Dances of Universal Peace
Come, Come, Whoever You Are
Wonderer, worshipper, lover of leaving.
It doesn't matter.
Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Come, even if you have broken your vow
a thousand times
Come, yet again, come, come.
- Mewlana Jalaluddin Rumi
The Dances of Universal Peace is a community meditation practice of mantra and movement. We sing and dance creating harmony in body, mind and spirit. Quiet reflection time is offered between the dances. Poems or prayers may be shared as well. This evening is a time to fall into a loving space, supported by musicians and leaders of the dances.
Elements of the dance practice include: Breath, Feelings, Listening, Moving together, Silence and the Sacred phrase.
The Dances of Universal Peace calls to those who wish to explore the practice of mantra and movement. We gather in a circle to dance, supported by three wonderful musicians, lead by experienced dance leaders who teach the song and movements. Expect nothing, gain joy!
Reflections on the Dances of Universal Peace: Love Harmony and Beauty
by Sarah-Elizabeth Whitcomb
When I was in college I stumbled upon the Dances of Universal Peace in Cambridge, MA. Then I knew in my heart I would return again and again to this community of people drawn to sing and dance in harmony. There were years when I was not dancing regularly in community, yet I sang mantras to my young children and danced them around their room. As my children grew, I answered the call to lead the dances. This deepened my practice of being present to the gifts held by the mantra and movements.
The Dances of Universal Peace open the heart to the expanse of peace, joy and love that exists inside when we vibrate our voices together as one. Movement and mantra invite a release of life's worries. When we look into the eyes of our partner, there is a moment to look into a mirror to see again our own reflection. All too soon this mirror is behind us and another appears, this one different than the last. Being present with another person opens a door to being present within yourself.
The practice of the Dances of Universal Peace are for people who enjoy moving meditation. Mantras from many religious traditions are experienced: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Native American, New Age and more. Leaders sing and demonstrate each dance, teaching all that is needed in the moment. Musicians support our singing and dancing. There is no need to arrive knowing anything about the evening's journey. Show up. that is all you ask of yourself. Be present to the possibility of co-creating harmony and beauty.
Our community here in Concord welcomes those new to the dances! We are in our second year of creating the Dances of Universal Peace@ Concord UU community. Join us with your presence, your voice and your body/mind.
Glad to have you come! Come again!
