Children’s Faith Development

Programs for 2016-17

Preschool & Kindergarten

Celebrating Me and My World
This program provides children ages 3-6 with experiences and opportunities to grow their sense of trust and caring and to develop their self-identity and their sense of connectedness with all of life. It begins by celebrating the wondrous qualities of the children themselves and expands outward to the things and people around them.

Grades 1, 2 & 3

Love Will Guide Us
In this program, children learn to seek guidance in life through the lens of our Unitarian Universalist Sources, with an emphasis on love. Together we ask questions such as, "Where did we come from?" "What is our relationship to the Earth and other creatures?" "How can we respond with love, even in bad situations?" "What happens when you die?" Sessions apply wisdom from our Sources to help participants answer these questions. Children will learn that asking questions is valued in Unitarian Universalism, even as they begin to shape their own answers.

Grades 4, 5 & 6

Sing to the Power
Sing to the Power affirms our Unitarian Universalist heritage of confronting “powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love.” Participants experience their own power, and understand how it can help them to be leaders.

Grades 7 & 8

Our Whole Lives
This year the 7th and 8th graders (and high schoolers) are invited to participate in the Adult Lifespan Faith Development classes where appropriate. They can learn to play ukulele, hike on the trails behind the church, or sing in the choir. In January we will offer Our Whole Lives, a comprehensive, progressive sexuality education program that models and teaches caring, compassion, respect, and justice. OWL, as it is affectionately known, moves beyond the intellect to address the attitudes, values, and feelings that youth have about themselves and their world. The class is taught by trained facilitators and parents are encouraged to stay closely connected with the curriculum to improve communication with their children around issues of sexuality, sexual health, and responsible sexual decision making.

Grades 9-12

Senior Youth Group
Our high school youth group meets weekly on Fridays from 7-8:30 pm. Leadership is shared between youth and adults, and activities range from games, cooking, and conversation about our lives and how our values impact our decision-making, to fundraising events, field trips, or maybe spreading joy in the world by giving out free hugs in downtown Concord. High schoolers are also encouraged to participate in the life of the congregation by attending and participating in worship, volunteering in the children’s program, and taking part in events and activities of their church.
