Each Sunday we “embrace the beauty within each of us, yet acknowledge the imperfections that make us human.” UNLESS, it seems, you are a celebrity leader, dead or alive. Those leaders we expect to be first-rate and beyond reproach, flawless and infallible, honorable and admirable in all aspects of their public and private lives. What would it mean to welcome, treasure and respect the outstanding gifts of our leaders (whether cultural, spiritual, or political) despite the imperfections that crack the pedestals upon which we have placed them? The Ancient Greeks knew better. Even their highest gods were deeply flawed – to be adored and abhorred, admired and detested all at once.
