As we reflect on another year of our country’s existence, what can we truly do to honor and celebrate the best of America’s principles? I suggest that this cannot simply be another year, where we mark the passing of time, with fireworks and frivolity; instead, I will offer some of my perspective on how we might embrace the opportunity to celebrate living in America by exercising our views, promoting our perspectives, and engaging our world through the institutions that have been designed to allow for an inclusive, pluralistic society. This will not be a conventional happy birthday celebration; this will be an opportunity to consider our options for celebrating our country, by undertaking hard, heavy, heartfelt work.
